How to let your child sleep well in the heat

During the warmer months, especially during a heatwave, sleep can feel a little harder for little ones. A few small changes can make bedtime feel calmer, cooler, and more comfortable for everyone.

Our favourite tips for helping your child sleep in the heat.

1. Take the duvet out of the cover

It sounds obvious, but the easiest way to make a bed cooler is to remove the duvet. Even without a heavy duvet, the filling can trap heat around your child’s body. Let your child sleep under the single layer of breathable organic cotton instead.

2. Keep bedrooms cool during the day

Keep bedrooms cool during the day by opening windows early in the morning, before the heat builds, then close them again with curtains or blackout blinds drawn. A shaded, calm room can make a big difference by bedtime.

3. Use breathable natural fabrics

Little ones often need less clothing than usual, sometimes just a nappy or lightweight pyjamas. Breathable natural fabrics like organic cotton help the body stay comfortable through the night.

4. A cooler bath before bed

A slightly cooler bath before bed can also help children wind down, though the water should still feel warm and comforting. For older children, a cool damp cloth on the forehead can feel soothing before sleep.

5. Help your child stay hydrated

During hot days, keeping your child hydrated is especially important. Plenty of water throughout the day helps regulate body temperature and supports better sleep at night.

6. Keep bedtime calm and familiar

Most importantly, try to keep bedtime feeling calm and familiar. Stories, cuddles, soft lighting, and a steady routine help children feel safe and relaxed.

Every child is different, and sometimes small changes are all it takes. A cooler room, lighter bedding, and a slower evening rhythm can help everyone sleep a little more peacefully through the summer months.
